What you should know


A web browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome. No special photography software is required for this course.



Learning activities and assignments are designed so you may complete them using minimal equipment, however it is recommended you have access to the following:

  1. A camera with full manual control over shutter speed, aperture, focus and ISO. Most cameras have these functions, but please check your camera manual. Phone cameras are generally not adequate for this course. A DSLR, bridge or mirrorless camera system is recommended.
  1. In addition to your camera, you will need:
  • At least one flash unit (speedlight) or external strobe light.
  • A tripod for your camera
  • A budget softbox, shoot-through umbrella or other diffuser for your flash unit.
  • At least one light stand
  • A weight or sandbag
  • A bounce card or reflector – this may be as simple as a sheet of white cardboard
